Yavapai College looks to the future of education by offering classes in the Metaverse.
It is an immersive way for students to learn through virtual and augmented reality, as it is called ‘Metaversity’.
The university has won a grant from Meta and plans to partner with VictoryXR, a company specializing in VR education.
This grant will provide Yavapai College with 25 Meta Quest 2 headsets for use by students and instructors. The university also has 10 branded classrooms in VictoryXR’s virtual academy. In addition, YC faculty will receive training from VictoryXR.
“Yavapai College is poised to bring the future of education to our students and communities,” said Dr. Lisa Rhine, Chancellor of Yavapai College. “Virtual and augmented reality are poised to transform just about every industry, including education, and YC plans to be at the forefront of that change,” she said.
In its current form, online students can find learning through video conferencing difficult, passive, and unenjoyable.
That’s where VictoryXR comes in, providing an immersive classroom and campus in virtual reality. The platform allows students to interact in a synchronous yet virtual environment. An educator is given training and her 3D objects (over 6,000 and growing) to teach students a variety of subjects.
“I attended a class in the VictoryXR Virtual Academy and it’s a great way to teach and learn. will change the way people work and learn.” added Dr. Rhine.
The specific Metaversity classes that YC will offer have not yet been selected, but more information will become available in the coming months.
“The shift to metaversity education will change the way professors teach and ultimately create opportunities for college students to learn in both worlds,” said Steve Grubbs, CEO of VictoryXR. .
