Amazon Graviton3 vs. Intel Xeon vs. AMD EPYC Performance Review

Earlier this week, AWS announced the general availability of the new Arm Neoverse-V1-based processor, Graviton 3.Immediately after that I posted some initials Graviton3 benchmark Against the previous generation Graviton 2 which showed a huge generational improvement with Amazon’s new in-house Arm server processor. Since then, we’ve run a more robust set of about 100 benchmarks across the original Graviton instances, Graviton2, Graviton3, and even the entire competing instances of Intel Xeon and AMD EPYC. This is a much larger collection of Graviton 3 performance benchmarks running on Ubuntu 22.04LTS.

In today’s article, the following Amazon EC2 instances were benchmarked to better measure the performance potential of Graviton 3 and Amazon’s price performance in the cloud.

a1.4xlarge -Original Graviton processor with Cortex-A72 core. The a1.4xlarge instance type was priced on demand for $ 0.408 USD per hour.

c6g.4xlarge -Neoverse-Current previous generation Graviton2 instance type with N1 core. The price of the on-demand c6g.4xlarge was $ 0.544 per hour.

c6a.4xlarge -AMD EPYC7003 “Milan” instance type with AMD EPYC7R13 processor. The price of the c6a.4xlarge instance was $ 0.612 per hour on demand.

c6i.4xlarge -Intel Xeon scalable “Ice Lake” instance type with Xeon Platinum 8375C processor. The c6i.4xlarge used the Xeon Platinum 8375C processor. The price of the c6i.4xlarge instance type was $ 0.68 per hour on demand.

c7g.4xlarge -Neoverse-New Graviton 3 instance type with V1 core. The on-demand price for c7g.4xlarge is currently $ 0.58 per hour.

The size of AWS 4xlarge is 16 vCPUs and 32GB of RAM. All of these Amazon EC2 instances were tested using Ubuntu 22.04 LTS with a default Linux 5.15 kernel and a GCC 11.2 based compiler compared to previous Graviton 3 tests using the default Amazon Linux 2 OS. rice field. For 16 vCPUs, all Graviton processors are physical CPU cores and there is no SMT / HT, but for AMD and Intel instances there is a mix of physical cores and sibling threads. Approximately 100 different benchmarks were run, observing Graviton 3’s performance against these various instances. So, after seeing a significant improvement from Graviton 2 to Graviton 3, how much progress has been made from the original Graviton, how Amazon’s Arm server processor is Intel Xeon Ice Lake and AMD EPYC Milan, with raw performance and performance per dollar.
