RAID: Shadow Legends announced a limited-time collaboration with Monster Hunter that’s adding a handful of new characters to the hit role-playing game. The crossover is yet another step in the RPG’s content strategy that previously saw RAID: Shadow Legends expand its character roster with real-life celebrities like Ninja.
Originally released in early 2019, RAID: Shadow Legends leveraged YouTube sponsorships and an addictive gameplay loop into a smashing hit that captivated countless players. According to the latest data shared by Israeli developer Plarium Games, its gacha RPG amassed 75 million downloads and grossed more than $1 billion in revenue since its release. As of January 2020, RAID: Shadow Legends is also available on PC and macOS, with all of its versions continuing to receive content updates on a regular basis.
Monster Hunter Now Is Rife with Mainline Crossover Potential
Monster Hunter Now aims to bring more attention to the series, and crossovers with mainline entries is the perfect way to achieve this.
The latest such update arrives in the form of a Capcom collaboration that adds five new Legendary Champions with unique weapons and armor crafted from parts of some Monster Hunter staples such as Zinogre, as well as the imposing dragons Fatalis and Rathalos. One of them is the Rathalos Blademaster Champion, who is obtainable for free by logging into the game for seven days over the course of the event, which runs from January 9 through March 5. The remaining four characters will be made available as part of limited-time RAID: Shadow Legends events in the coming weeks.
RAID: Shadow Legends Monster Hunter Legendary Champions
The new characters won’t be mere reskins, with Plarium confirming that their unique weapons and armor sets will provide them with fighting skills that “mirror” some iconic Monster Hunter abilities. Capcom had an active role in designing the crossover content, helping Plarium create an expansion that will satisfy both sets of fans, the Tel Aviv-based studio said.
The five Champions based on the Monster Hunter franchise have skills that mirror some of the abilities available to characters who equip the same weapons and armor when playing the Monster Hunter games.
Aside from adding new playable characters to RAID: Shadow Legends, this collaboration will also include a number of themed in-game activities. Additionally, Plarium is planning to release multiple trailers over the course of the event that will expand on its game’s lore and offer an in-universe explanation for how the Monster Hunter creatures made their way to Teleria, the world of RAID: Shadow Legends.
A New Monster Hunter Collab Begins As Another Is About To End
This collaboration with Capcom kicks off mere weeks before the Japanese gaming giant is set to end a different Monster Hunter crossover. Specifically, the company recently revealed that Monster Hunter Rise will be removing the DLC content resulting from its collaborations with Universal Studios Japan and Sega’s Sonic the Hedgehog on January 21. Players who claim the content by that date will be able to continue using it indefinitely.
