Crucial, the consumer brand of American chip manufacturer Micron Technology, is set to release its next generation of PCIe 5.0 SSDs, according to industry leakers. The new drives will be faster than any of today’s offerings, if rumors are to be believed.
The Crucial T700 is among the world’s fastest SSDs, delivering maximum sequential read and write speeds of 12,400 MB/s and 11,800 MB/s, respectively, thanks to its use of the latest PCIe 5.0 data standard. While the T700 performs around twice as fast as older PCIe 4.0 drives like the Cruclal P5 Plus, it still cannot completely utilize the 15,700MB/s bandwidth PCIe 5.0 affords to devices that use four PCIe lanes like NVMe SSDS for PCs. A rumored successor to the T700 that has popped up online, however, might be able to close that gap.
Samsung T9 Portable SSD Review
Samsung gives its line of portable SSDs a huge speed bump with the T9, offering some of the fastest performance around.
A new Crucial PCIe 5.0 SSD, dubbed the T705, is already scheduled to be launched, Japanese outlet Jisakuhibi reported. A spec list for the new drive shared by Jisakuhibi showed that the T705 will be able to reach sequential read speeds of up to 14,500MB/s. If these leaks are true, then Crucial’s next SSD would outclass not just its predecessor, but also every other offering on the market. For context, the Samsung 990 PRO, which is considered to be one of the best gaming SSDs right now, has a peak transfer rate of 7,450 MB/s.
The Crucial T705 will be offered in 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB capacities, with the 2TB model being the fastest, according to Jisakuhibi. The new drives will come in black and white with or without heatsinks, but only a limited edition white 2TB SKU will be equipped with a white heatsink, the outlet claimed. Known hardware industry leaker momomo_us shared supposed photos of the T705 on Twitter, including its special white variant. Much like the best DDR5 RAM kits, powerful SSDs often come with heatsinks to deal with the high temperatures the devices generate.
Crucial T705 PCIe 5.0 NVMe SSD Leak
- Speeds: Up to 14,500MB/s read and 12,700MB/s write
- Capacities: 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB
- Colors: Black and white
- Release date: TBA
Despite PCIe 5.0 SSDs undoubtedly offering better performance compared to their PCIe 4.0 counterparts, the jump to the newest generation is not really considered a necessity by many. Even SSD seller Corsair believes PCIe 4.0 drives to be perfectly suitable for a majority of gamers and content creators. Upgrading the PS5 SSD to a faster PCIe 5.0 drive, for example, would likely shave off just a few seconds’ worth of loading times in most titles.
The difference in performance between a hard disk drive and any good SSD from the likes of Crucial and Samsung, however, is much more significant. Some modern games like Bethesda’s Starfield on PC require SSDs to properly handle their assets and vast worlds.
Crucial P5 Plus 2 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive
The Crucial P5 Plus M.2 SSD delivers remarkably fast speed with a transfer rate of up to 6600MB/s and excellent data protection. This drive is designed specifically for intensive workloads, like gaming and creative applications.
Although you will get the most performance using it with a Gen 4 slot, this drive is also backward compatible with Gen 3.0 slots.
