The Rayman franchise could finally be coming back to modern platforms, if a rumor from a known gaming industry insider is to be believed. The latest rumors about Rayman indicated that Ubisoft may be working on bringing back the franchise as a platforming compilation of games, though the developers have not released any official information about it.
Originally released in 1995 for platforms like the PlayStation and the 3DO, the first Rayman game was a 2D platformer that saw Ubisoft’s titular protagonist navigate through a valley to free captured Electoons and defeat bosses at the end of each thematic world. Rayman then transitioned over to 3D platforming in 1999’s Rayman 2: The Great Escape, which was considered one of the most challenging PS1 games from Ubisoft at the time. The most recent Rayman console title was 2013’s Rayman Legends, though Ubisoft’s platforming hero has since appeared in spin-offs like Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope.
Ubisoft Is Rumored To Have Two Rayman Projects In Development
Although the Rayman series has been dormant for over a decade, a new rumor surrounding one of Ubisoft’s iconic protagonists could offer some good news for fans. As spotted by ComicBook, known industry insider NashWeedle stated that Ubisoft is potentially developing two Rayman games, with one of them being a compilation of past titles for modern platforms. Nash Weedle claimed that these Rayman projects could be 3D platformers that use the art style seen in Rayman Legends and Rayman Origins. The art style used by Rayman Legends is reminiscent of hand-drawn cartoons. Additionally, Nash Weedle said that both of the proposed Rayman projects could also be shown off behind closed doors to potential partners during Gamescom in Cologne, Germany. The annual gaming trade show runs from August 20 to 24.
Per its company policy, Ubisoft has not publicly commented about the Rayman rumors. Ergo, anything stated must be taken with a fine grain of salt. However, word of Rayman‘s return is not a new prospect. In September 2024, Ubisoft renewed the trademark for Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc, which was originally launched in 2003 on platforms like the PS2 and the GameCube. Though Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc has not seen a re-release since then, the renewed trademark sparked speculation among fans.
As for Gamescom, the expo kicks off with Geoff Keighley hosting Gamescom Opening Night Live on Tuesday, August 19, at 2:00 PM Eastern. With other Ubisoft remakes and projects still under development, it remains to be seen when Rayman will return to the spotlight.
