In a recent post, Twitter user RibShark revealed that the Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door remake seems to contain code for handling 4K, a resolution that the Switch cannot even output. Some have speculated that the discovered lines of code hint at a 4K-capable Switch 2, with YouTuber Aero claiming that a port of the game for the upcoming console would likely feature 60 FPS support as well. 2024’s Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door remake has a 30 FPS cap and can only run at 900p even when playing on the Switch’s higher-performing docked mode.
Nintendo has not officially disclosed any details regarding the Switch’s successor, but developers were reportedly given the opportunity to take a look at the console during Gamescom last August. The Switch 2 can run The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild at 4K 60 FPS with no loading times and make use of Nvidia’s Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) upscaling technology, rumors suggested. It will also be underclocked to around 800 MHz while in handheld mode, resulting in a longer battery life and less overheating, according to sources.
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Teases Nintendo Switch 2 Feature
Nintendo will make an announcement about the Switch’s successor within fiscal year 2024, company president Shuntaro Furukawa recently confirmed. He added that the new console will not be mentioned in June’s Nintendo Direct, which will instead focus on the original Switch’s software lineup for the latter half of the year.
Aside from the Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door remake, there are several major releases for the Switch in 2024. Princess Peach: Showtime! and a remake of Mario vs. Donkey Kong were launched in March and February, respectively. The former is the first game in nearly two decades to feature Princess Peach as the main protagonist. Meanwhile, Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD is set to be released on June 27.
