A popular Roblox game has become a way for players to bypass the game’s chat filters. Roblox has amassed a platform of over 90 million daily active users, and the company has been working to make the game a safe place for all its users. But with every update that the game makes in the right direction, groups of players find ways to circumvent the rules.
In May, Roblox discontinued its LegacyChatService and converted the game to TextChatService. The new chat service was put into place to follow the updated parental control restrictions in an effort to make the game a safer place for children. While the new chat made it harder for older games to operate, it did make it harder for hate speech to filter through.
Spray Paint Gives Players the Opportunity to Bypass Chat Filters
A recent CBS News report discovered that a popular Roblox game called Spray Paint! has become the home of hate speech. Spray Paint! is a game based in a virtual skate park where players can graffiti walls with art or messages. The game is popular among artists for drawing characters and player avatars for content creation, but with the recent chat updates, it’s become the place for degrading messages. Walls and ramps have been covered in swastikas, along with slurs against minority groups and references to the Third Reich.
The CBS report brings yet another hit to Roblox’s recent reputation. The state of Louisiana is suing Roblox for failure to protect kids from predatory behavior. This recent discovery of hate speech could add fuel to the lawsuit. Roblox told CBS that it has a human review team to evaluate flagged user reports and encourages players to keep reporting images that go against the community guidelines.
Roblox implemented new restrictions in November to help protect children in the game. Games that are rated higher than Mild can no longer be played by users under the age of nine, but they still have a parental consent option to access Moderate games. Spray Paint! is rated as Moderate, which would allow players over the age of 13 to play the game without needing parental consent.
Despite all the recent setbacks, Roblox still has a light that shines in the darkness. Grow a Garden passed Fortnite in concurrent user count in July, becoming Roblox‘s most popular game of all time. The idle farming simulator has been adding content throughout 2025, bringing in new gamers daily.
