On August 27, a gaming industry leaker shared more specifications surrounding a planned PlayStation 6 handheld console, namely noting that the console could include a dock that would allow the unit to connect to a TV and have a higher clock speed. The leaker compared the proposed PlayStation handheld console’s dock to the one used by the Nintendo Switch 2, and noted the spec differences between docked and handheld modes on the PS6.
While Sony has not officially revealed what the next generation of PlayStation will look like, that has not stopped speculation surrounding the company’s plans. In July, rumors circulated that both the PS6 and the next-generation Xbox console would continue to utilize AMD technology for the third consecutive generation, with an emphasis on AMD’s RDNA 5 graphical architecture. Both the PS6 and the next-gen Xbox are also planned to launch sometime in 2027, though no concrete dates have been stated as of this writing.
New Leak Claims That The PS6 Handheld May Have A Dock
In a follow-up video to a previous post about the rumored specs of the handheld PS6, a gaming industry leaker provided more information about the portable console. According to an August 27 video by YouTube content creator Moore’s Law Is Dead, the PS6’s handheld version, codenamed “Canis” in the video, will include a dock that allows the console to run at higher clock speeds. Similar to the Nintendo Switch 2’s dock in purpose, the portable PS6’s dock would provide a performance uplift, allowing the console to go from 1.2GHz to roughly 1.65 GHz. The PS6 handheld in docked mode would also offer over twice the ray tracing performance of the PS5 while docked. However, its rumored rasterization performance could be slightly lower than that of the PS5 unless a game is patched with the PS6 handheld in mind.
The PS6 handheld is stated to include backward compatibility with PS5 and PS4 games alongside its non-handheld counterpart, and will be powered by a 6-core AMD Zen 6 processor with RDNA 5 integrated graphics. Moore’s Law Is Dead further stated that the PS6 handheld will have about 60% more computational bandwidth than the upcoming ROG Xbox Ally X, which utilizes a Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor.
Given that Sony has not officially revealed anything about its next console, all rumors must be taken with a fine grain of salt. However, with the next-gen Xbox also rumored to have more power than the PS6, it remains to be seen how the next console generation will play out.
