PlayStation Plus is Absolutely on Fire Right Now

The PlayStation Plus subscription service is on one of its better runs, with high-profile games added across all three tiers. When it comes to PlayStation Plus, gamers have three different tiers to choose from. Essential gets players the monthly free games and online multiplayer access, while Extra comes with a large library of PS4 and PS5 games to check out on top of the lower tier’s benefits. PS Plus Premium includes absolutely everything that the service has to offer, which means the free games in the Essential tier, the PS4 and PS5 games in the Extra tier, and a selection of classics from past PlayStation consoles like the PS1, PS2, PSP, and PS3.

Sony keeps PlayStation Plus subscribers engaged by regularly updating the games available on the service. There are times when surprise updates come, but for the most part, PS Plus sticks to its established pattern. The first Tuesday of the month is when the monthly free PS Plus games are added, and an update a couple of weeks later adds new Extra and Premium games while simultaneously removing some titles from those tiers.

Not all PlayStation Plus updates are treated equally. There are some months when the free monthly games underwhelm, and there are other months when the Extra and Premium updates do live up to fan expectations. However, it’s safe to say that PlayStation Plus has been on a hot streak lately, with this month being one of the best the service has seen for quite some time across all three tiers. Some of the recent PS Plus additions stand out even more compared to others, with these eight recently added games all going a long way to ensure that the service is worth signing up for right now.

Big New Additions to PS Plus

  • Abiotic Factor (Extra)
  • Lies of P (Essential)
  • Mortal Kombat 1 (Extra)
  • Resident Evil 2 (Premium)
  • Resident Evil 3: Nemesis (Premium)
  • Spider-Man Remastered (Extra)
  • Sword of the Sea (Extra)
  • Unicorn Overlord (Extra)

The monthly free games given away through the Essential tier can be hit or miss, but many fans seem happy with the August 2025 offerings. DayZ and My Hero One’s Justice 2 are part of the lineup, but the headliner is definitely Lies of P. Lies of P has been hailed as one of the best non-FromSoftware Soulslike games made to date, with an impressive level of polish and rewarding, challenging gameplay. PS Plus subscribers across all tiers have until September to claim the latest free games for their digital libraries to keep forever.

On the PS Plus Extra side of things, subscribers were treated to Abiotic Factor as a day one game in July, letting them play a fan-favorite co-op survival game in its entirety through the service. The latest PS Plus Extra update also added Mortal Kombat 1, Spider-Man Remastered, and Unicorn Overlord to the library on top of the critically-acclaimed day one game Sword of the Sea.

PS Plus Premium gives subscribers the most bang for their buck, as they get everything added to Essential and Extra, plus some exclusives. The latest PS Plus Premium update added the classic PS1 survival-horror games Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis to the lineup, ensuring that fans can now play through the original PS1 Resident Evil trilogy with their subscription. The games are missing trophy support, but they still hold up as absolute classics of the genre.

Here’s hoping PS Plus can keep the momentum going strong and deliver another exciting month of new games in September.
