This article contains spoilers from One Piece’s Elbaf Arc.
One Piece’s Elbaf arc has slowly been revealing exciting lore about the world of One Piece, and right now, thanks to Loki’s Flashback, Oda is finally revealing legends of the world, such as Rocks D. Xebec. Naturally, when one speaks of the era before the Great Pirate Era, Gol D. Roger does come up, and inevitably so.
In fact, when speaking of the most legendary pirates in the One Piece world, Roger stands at the top as the greatest, especially in recent history. Thanks to the Loki flashback, Oda has finally revealed the secret behind Roger’s strength, and it isn’t just Haki.
Roger Conquered The World With Haki
- Roger Didn’t Have A Devil Fruit
- Kaido Considers Roger The Greatest, Even Greater Than Rocks
When Roger was first introduced in the story and fans for to see bits about him in the early parts, most assumed that he had some sort of Devil Fruit. In fact, Roger being the previous user of the Gomu Gomu no Mi was a very prevalent idea in the One Piece community. However, the further the story progressed and the more that fans saw of Roger, it became increasingly clear that Roger ended up becoming the Pirate King without even having a Devil Fruit. The Wano Country arc of One Piece made it quite clear that Roger conquered the world with Haki alone.

According to Kaido, Devil Fruit abilities offer a great advantage, but in the end, it is Haki that makes the biggest difference and it conquers all. Of course, this is Kaido’s opinion, and in the end, he did lose to someone with inferior Haki, but Roger existing as the Pirate King and matching pirates like Newgate is proof of the fact that there is some truth to Kaido’s statement. After all, for Kaido, Roger was even greater than Rocks since he had conquered everything.
Roger’s Secret Lies In One Piece’s Most Destructive Fighting Style
Roger Copied Rocks’s Fighting Style
Undoubtedly, Roger’s main weapon in One Piece is Haki, but it is how he brings out this Haki that matters. As seen in One Piece chapter 1155, there exists a special style of fighting that allows one to blast enemies with Haki in a way that they’re hit with a hammer or cannonfire. Rocks used this with his sword and despite it being a cutting weapon, his attacks actually struck like a hammer.

Curiously enough, Roger also used this technique. Since Rocks was its original user, Roger most certainly learned it by fighting Rocks. This ability allowed Roger to blow away Oden, and later on, clash evenly with Whitebeard. This is what made Roger special, as he eventually mastered the technique that Rocks was so good at using.
Only Roger, Rocks, and Shanks Can Use It
In the entirety of One Piece, only three characters are known to have the skill to use this style of fighting. Rocks was the one who invented it, most likely. Roger learned it by observing him, and of course, eventually, Shanks learned it by observing Roger, as confirmed by Oda himself.
