One Piece: 8 Best Devil Fruits For Durability, Ranked

This list contains spoilers

Summary

  • Devil Fruits in One Piece focus on defense, providing physical durability in battle.
  • Some fruits create elemental shields or increase size, making opponents’ victories challenging.
  • Aokiji, Burgess, and Akainu demonstrate high effectiveness and reliability with defense-based Devil Fruits.

While it’s always going to be useful to have an ability which allows someone to throw out fireballs and explosions, there are some characters in One Piece who have instead been gifted Devil Fruits which are more based around survivability. In other words, these abilities can greatly enhance a person’s physical durability in battle, making it extremely difficult to take them down, let alone actually defeat them in one-on-one combat.

While some Devil Fruits will cover their user with a shield of some kind of elemental armor, there are others which work to bolster a person’s size, forcing their opponents to get creative if they want any chance of scoring a victory. When taking a look at the One Piece Devil Fruits which primarily revolve around defense and durability, this is how they rank in terms of their overall effectiveness and reliability in battle.

8

Ice Ice Fruit

Aokiji Can Use His Ice To Protect Him From Incoming Damage

Aokiji, the former Admiral who would end up going rogue after being beaten in battle by Akainu, has been able to utilize his ice powers in some pretty unique ways. While he’s more than capable of creating makeshift weapons or simply freezing his enemies solid so he can get back to napping as soon as possible, he’s also been able to protect himself by shielding his body with sturdy shields of ice.

Not only that, he’s even able to restore his own limbs thanks to his fruit, as was demonstrated when he created a new leg after sustaining a nasty injury in his fight on Punk Hazard. Aokiji has long been considered one of the most dangerous characters in the world of One Piece, and considering it’s hard to even land a strike on him, it’s no wonder why he’s earned such a reputation.

7

Strong Strong Fruit

This Fruit Provides A Significant Upgrade To Burgess’ Durability And Offensive Power

As the name implies, the Strong Strong Fruit grants Burgess a staggering power boost anytime he decides to switch it on, so much so that he was even capable of ripping off a slice of an entire mountain before then hurling it over his head. Thanks to his incredible muscle mass, Burgess towers over pretty much everyone when he juices himself up, meaning only the most powerful of attacks will be enough to topple him over.

As one of Blackbeard’s most reliable crewmates, it makes sense that Burgess would be absurdly powerful, since not just anyone can end up sailing the seas alongside the mighty Yonko. While Sabo was able to propel Burgess back with his Fire Fire Fruit, considering this is regarded as one of the strongest abilities in the series, it just goes to show how far someone needs to go in order to deal any sort of damage to the giant brute known as Burgess.

6

Mag Mag Fruit

Getting Close To Akainu Is Tricky When His Body Is Dripping With Magma

Logia Devil Fruits, which allow their users to turn into a specific element at will, inherently provide the user with a natural layer of defense, but Akainu’s magma fruit stands out because of the element in question. With his body scorching with magma, getting even remotely close to Akainu is much easier said than done, but because he has full mastery over his fruit, it means that those who are lucky to even land an attack usually won’t end up actually hitting him.

A prime example of this came in the Marineford War where Akainu was more than comfortable allowing chunks of his body to be blown apart, considering it was only the magma which was being hit and not his actual body. While Oda has confirmed that the Mag Mag fruit is one of the most powerful fruits in the series when it comes to offense, it’s also no exaggeration to say that it’s pretty incredible when it comes to defense and durability too.

5

Ancient Zoan, Model: Mammoth

Jack Can Bulk Up His Defenses Any Time He’s In Immediate Danger

Jack is already a pretty big guy as is, but he turns into an absolute behemoth once he activates his ancient Zoan Devil Fruit, which enables him to transform into a giant mammoth. Back when Jack was invading Zou to seek out Raizo, he was able to trample through the Mink’s homeland thanks to his enormous size, while also staying protected from any incoming damage thanks to his giant stature.

He may be pretty slow in this form, but he makes up this shortcoming by being incredibly durable, to the point where the Minks had no choice but to beg for their lives when he decided to terrorize them since they were unable to fight back. It’s no wonder why Kaido hand-picked Jack to be one of his commanders, considering there’s barely anyone capable of putting him on his back.

4

Mythical Zoan, Model: Daibutsu

Only Giants Stand A Chance Of Taking Down Sengoku When He Transforms

Zoan Devil Fruits drastically changed the appearance of their user, but Sengoku’s fruit takes this to a whole new level. In the blink of an eye, Sengoku is able to turn into a giant golden Buddha who is even bigger than some of the giants seen throughout the series. When he entered this form during the Marineford War, Sengoku could crush entire swarms of pirates with a single punch, and due to his giant stature, no one was able to deal any sort of significant damage back to him.

While this form has only been shown one time in the entire series, it was made crystal clear that harming Sengoku is extremely difficult once he takes on his mythical transformation. Then again, nothing less would be expected of someone who once served as the Fleet Admiral.

3

Huge Huge Fruit

There’s Big, And Then There’s Sanjuan Wolf

When Sanjuan Wolf first appeared in the Marineford War, many fans assumed that he was a giant who probably hailed from Elbaph, but this actually wasn’t true at all. In fact, the reason Wolf is by far the biggest character in the entire series is because of his Huge Huge Fruit, enabling him to increase his size to an absurd degree, to the point where he even manages to tower over the biggest of giants.

While he may not be very mobile in this form, the main benefit of the Huge Huge Fruit is that barely anyone is able to knock Sanjuan Wolf over, unless they are already incredibly powerful or have some hidden technique up their sleeve. Blackbeard certainly saw a lot of potential in Sanjuan Wold when he broke him out of Impel Down Prison, and it’s probably because he realized that this guy would make the perfect giant distraction to buy some time while he tries to steal yet another Devil Fruit.

2

Stone Stone Fruit

Pica Can Merge Himself With Stone Structures As A Way To Increase His Defenses

Fans might remember Pica as a member of Doflamingo’s family who is most well-known for is incredibly squeaky voice. However, what also makes Pica such a fascinating character is his Stone Stone Fruit, as while it might seem like a Logia fruit on the surface, it actually works quite differently. Pica cannot turn into stone, but instead, is able to merge himself with stone structures, which he can then control at will.

For example, Pica decided to merge his body with the Dressrosa Castle so that he could become a giant, with the average pirate or marine having little to no chance of dealing any significant damage to him. While Zoro was eventually able to slice Pica in two, it’s important to remember that by this point in the story, this member of the monster trio was already insanely strong and also had to unleash a lot of his own power to get the job done, highlighting just how durable Pica is when he decides to bolster his defenses.

1

Twinkle Twinkle Fruit

Jozu Can Take A Tremendous Amount Of Punishment Without Feeling A Thing

Jozu didn’t get to show off his Devil Fruit ability until the Marineford War, but to say that it’s strong would be putting it mildly. After covering himself in a shield of diamond armor, Jozu is able to take a severe amount of punishment without feeling even an inch of pain. After all, diamond is the hardest substance in the world, so it’s almost impossible to counteract Jozu, especially for those who take him on but are unaware of his hidden ability.

During the Marineford War, Jozu was attacked left, right and center, yet managed to remain standing for much of the conflict thanks to his rock-solid suit of armor. He has also used his diamonds to inflict damage on a few occasions, but it’s clear that this fruit is primarily designed for defensive purposes.
