Respawn Entertainment is open to the idea of bringing Battlefield to the Nintendo Switch 2, a senior company official has revealed. But the EA-owned studio is not yet ready to commit to any concrete plans for the Switch successor.
While Nintendo’s much-anticipated console hasn’t yet been officially announced, some developers and publishers have already started confirming games for it. One of the first to do so was Wiggin Industries, a Spanish studio that said its Persona-like RPG Bestiario will be coming to the Switch 2 all the way back in February 2024.
Respawn Boss Is ‘Absolutely’ Open to Battlefield on Nintendo Switch 2
Respawn Entertainment, for its part, is not yet prepared to talk about specific plans for Nintendo’s upcoming console. Asked about the possibility of bringing Battlefield to the Switch 2, Respawn CEO Vince Zampella told IGN that he “can’t really comment” on a system that hasn’t been announced. Regardless, the official said that he is “absolutely” open to the idea of having the Battlefield series on the upcoming device, all the while praising Nintendo as a great partner.
No Battlefield Game Has Yet Been Ported to a Nintendo Console
A Switch 2 Battlefield game would mark a major milestone for the long-running FPS series, which just turned 22 on September 10. Despite receiving a dozen mainline installments over the past two decades, the franchise has yet to make its way to a Nintendo system, having traditionally only been offered on PlayStation and Xbox consoles, as well as PC.
Even if Respawn is already dead set on bringing its iconic franchise to the Switch successor, the chances of its Nintendo migration starting with the next Battlefield game appear dubious, at best. After all, Battlefield has historically always tried pushing the boundaries of graphical fidelity, and Nintendo hasn’t been competing in the console spec race since the GameCube days. It is hence more plausible that if Respawn were to finally bring Battlefield to Nintendo systems, it would start with some of the older series entries.
While EA’s subsidiary remains non-committal about its plans for the device, some smaller players in the industry are already happy to be pledging their support for Nintendo’s next console. The most recent to do so is Pathea Games, a Chinese studio that just announced its newly revealed life sim RPG My Time at Evershine will be coming to the Switch 2. As for when the console itself is expected to hit the market, industry watchers expect that to happen in Q2 2025. In the meantime, Nintendo’s recent decision to avoid doing a traditional September game showcase and some newly emerged rumors have both suggested that the Switch 2 will be officially revealed in the coming weeks, likely no later than early October 2024.
