What you need to know
- Developer Gustave Monce has released an early package for installing Windows 11 on Surface Duo 2.
- Monce previously released a tool to get Windows 11 on the original Surface Duo, and it’s mostly working now.
- The release is still incredibly early as the SoC only has one core working and there is no dual display touch support yet.

Must give expensive hardware to someone brave enough to tinker and run unintended softwareSo does Microsoft surface duo 2with its dual-screen Android smartphones, it has some early tools to run perfectly. Windows 11 operating system.
Also known as Gustave Mons @gus33000 on Twitterhas released version 2211.16 of the Surface Duo 2 driver. The whole project Post to GitHub Including instructions on how to make it all work, it’s not for the faint of heart.
this project is one Several Monce is working on the Surface Duo series. Both devices run his Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, so it’s possible to run Windows 11 on ARM. This issue occurs with sensors, cameras, touch displays, cellular, GPS, and all other hardware that requires drivers and a lot of testing.
Monce says that this is only version 1 of the project and that it’s still very early, but that it “has some cool features in the works.” on GitHub Project status page, the left display panel, temperature sensor, lid hall sensor, modern standby, USB C, buttons, and charger are all working. Only his one core in the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 is 8 short while the processor is (obviously) working.
As for what goes wrong, well, there are a lot of them. Cellular (calls, data, text, LTE), GPS, touch, pen digitizer, Wi-Fi, vibration motor, Bluetooth, camera, NFC are all on the list. As such, Windows 11 on the Surface Duo 2 is far from being an everyday operating system.
Monce also mentions some serious installation caveats to watch out for.
- You should back up your data as the installation process will erase your data.
- If you use an unlocked bootloader, you will lose your NFC payment.
- Not ready for outside use (do not touch, etc.).
- NO WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND.
This last part is very important, because if your Surface Duo 2 becomes unusable, you’re unlikely to rely on official support. That said, Monce is happy to help anyone who runs into problems on his Telegram channel or on his Twitter.
Getting Windows 11 on the Surface Duo 2 is a bit ironic. As we have pointed out in our history Original Surface DuoMicrosoft intended these devices to run newer versions of Windows. It’s called “Andromeda OS” internally. But that project fell apart because it missed a milestone. But instead of scrapping all development on the hardware, Microsoft decided to bring Android 11 with the help of Google.
The Surface Duo was never meant to run full Windows 11 like this project did, but even at this early stage it’s fun to see it in action. , shows how versatile Windows can be, although it remains questionable whether such a device would be practical for everyday use.
