The Antarctic Peninsula is revealed as a new control map for Season 3 of Overwatch 2, and you can shoot penguins for the first time.
Overwatch 2 introduces the sequel’s first King of the Hill map, and there’s plenty for players to get hooked on at launch.
Scheduled to debut in season 3the Antarctic Peninsula takes players to the coldest depths where they must trek through snow, ice caves, and abandoned ships to take over objectives from their enemies.
Dexerto had the opportunity to speak with level designer Trey Spisak, art director Dion Rogers, and lead narrative designer Gavin Jurgens-Fyhrie about the map and what players can expect.

OW2 Antarctic Peninsula lore
Many maps in Overwatch 2 are tied to specific heroes or lore-based elements, and Antarctica is no exception.
In this case, Antarctica is MayThe story is presented in the animated short Rise and Shine. This is very exciting for the development team.
According to Jurgens-Fyhrie, players will be able to experience much of its previously untold story, including the Overwatch icebreaker that attempted to save May and her colleagues but ultimately failed. .
“You can see some hints as to what May and her team were trying to find. Maybe we can find something that tells us something exciting,” he teased.

With so many stories to tell, the map PvE campaign planned for later this yearbut Dion Rogers remained tight-lipped about whether it would be used.
“Look forward to it,” he grins, noting that May has played an integral part in pushing the Overwatch canons forward.

3 Points of the Antarctic Peninsula
Like other KOTH maps, the Antarctic Peninsula is divided into three distinct areas that teams must fight to control.

Overwatch teams battle in caves, labs, and ships.
The second is a sub-level underground mine where scientists were working to discover new properties. However, despite being underground, there are a lot of verticals and drills that can pose some challenges for those trying to reach their objective.
Finally, the third setting focuses on a lab where fans can see what Mei and her colleagues have been up to for the Ecopoint area in Antarctica. This section has a lot of adjacent options, but a more “simpler” control point, but with an interesting platform right above it.

The ice map, described by Rogers as a little fishing mini-game, actually features fishing holes that the player can shoot and fish.
This map has a lot of Easter eggs.
Penguins, on the other hand, can be shot, but they don’t die, they just dodge bullets like the playful Neo from The Matrix. but I couldn’t get it to work.
Luckily, there are other things of interest. Players will be able to roam in deep snow and actually create designs thanks to new shaders that have been developed.
