Everything You Need to Know About RockShox’s Redesigned 2023 Forks & Shocks

by admin

Improved suspension components without batteries may soon follow, as you can guess from the feature-packed look of the electronically controlled RockShox Flight Attendant series forks released earlier this year. Introducing a new Pike and Lyric chassis design packed with some of the features of the Flight Attendant equipment, but the ZEB was also unforgettable. All of these forks also feature redesigned dampers, and you’ll also get the mechanical bonuses found on the Flight Attendant chassis.

Not limited to the front end of the bike, the 2023 menu also has a number of rear shocks, including the Super Deluxe Coil Ultimate Shock with independent threshold pistons and the DH Slab with externally adjustable hydraulic bottom-out controls. The most notable changes inside are the separation of high and low speed compression adjustments and the increased overlap of bushings, while the body of the coil shock is 21% stronger on the outside.

Fork chassis and overview

What’s the difference between the RockShox Ultimate level fork, in addition to the sharp lines of the Pike and Lyrik lower leg assembly and crown steerer unit (CSU) that mimic the ZEB? Basically everything. The technology is the same for the entire Pike, Lyrik, and ZEB Ulitmate series, but the air spring volume and chassis design have been tweaked to adjust the stiffness of each fork for the ideal use case. .. Both Pike and Lyrik maintain 35mm stanchions, but the ZEB chassis is virtually unchanged except for the pressure relief valve on the back of the lower extremities found on all premium fork models. ..

RockShox limits the movement of the new Pike and Lyrik to better distinguish each fork segment and optimizes the stiffness-to-weight ratio of the chassis for the type of bike to be mounted (including air springs). I made it possible. The number of trips is in the range of 120-140mm and 140-160mm in 10mm steps, and a set length air spring is required to change the travel. Only two years ago, the ZEB, whose chassis took over and held a wide bracket of 160-190 mm, made its debut.

Charger 3 damper

When RockShox approached the Charger 3’s damper design, it started out clean and favored the IFP style because of its ability to purge oil from the damper’s port. This allowed engineers to “separate” fast and slow compression, making each adjustment independent of each other and “without compromise”. Usually one changes a characteristic that the rider did not intend to change, as one slightly affects the other.

All Pike, Lyrik, and ZEB Ultimates and Select + forks are standard on Charger 3. Since the CSU has not changed, the damper can be retrofitted to any ZEB, but otherwise it will only fit the 2023 Pikes and Lyriks. With 15 clicks on the LSC, 5 clicks on the HSC, and 18 clicks on the rebound adjustment, RockShox believes that each click is a big enough change and the range of attenuation fits the weight and style of all riders at this time. Custom tuning is not available in. Much effort has also been made to make the Charger 3 as quiet as possible, part of its success underpinned by Maxima’s gorgeous damping fluid.

The bleeding procedure has changed for the new damper, but no new tools are needed to rebuild Charger 3. All service tutorials RockShox website..

Buttercup

These magical little elastomers at the bottom of the dampers and air springs smooth the transfer of force to these components as the fork begins to move into travel. They reduce high frequency vibrations by 20%, but this is not a simple RockShox-configured number. The test team used sensors to measure such things.

The ButterCups provide 4mm extravagant movement for the suspension and are exclusive to the same group of forks (2023 Pike and Lyriks, and 2021 + ZEB) to which the Charger 3 damper fits. The ButterCups set adds about 40 grams to the fork, while the new Pike and Lyrik have reduced overall weight.

DebonAir + Spring

Equipped with all 2023 Pike, Lyric and ZEB forks, the all-aluminum Debon Air + spring is larger in volume than the previous Debon Air C1 air spring, focusing on improving small bump absorption and height. Is placed. The new spring is equipped with a Butter Cup bumper and can be attached to ZEBs from 2021 onwards.

Pressure relief valve

The little buttons on these tricks release the unwanted pressure that builds up in the fork during rising or temperature changes, keeping things as sensitive as possible. Do you think you need a burp because the fork is stiff? Just tap the valve with a rag to absorb the remaining oil and things should feel normal again. They are on top of the upper bushing and are durable in the sense that they do not ingest dirt or water. In addition, 2023 Select and Base model forks (Pike, Lyrik, and ZEB) can be upgraded to accept pressure relief valves.

Ultimate bushing package and hub reinforcement

At the ultimate level, the length of the lower fork leg bushing has been increased by 53%. It is said that this improves support for the stanchions, reduces friction and distributes the load where the legs meet the bushings. With that in mind, the Ulitmate level bushings are factory-installed in a size specific to the 2023 fork, so a new bottom for the Select level fork is needed to achieve this upgrade.

Torque caps continue to work on larger specific RockShox standard machined surfaces, but smaller diameter common hub end caps have bolt-on options to mimic that idea.

Impact overview

The RockShox rear shock family has four deluxe ultimate rear shocks, two air shocks, and two coil spring rear shocks. Ultimate is basically an abbreviation for “aftermarket available” and is considered an upgrade to your current bike, but some top-end bikes may be equipped with these. Three of them are Super Deluxe, which adds features such as a fast compression adjuster. The two coil versions have an optional hydraulic bottom-out control that can be adjusted with 5 clicks to smooth out the last 20% of movement. Another attribute of the Super Deluxe Ultimate Coil Shock uses a 21% stronger body with increased bushing overlap.

Hydraulic bottom out

Unlike adding a volume spacer to the air shock to change the progression of the spring rate, the hydraulic bottom out adjuster is for fine-tuning the compression damping as the shock passes the last 20% of its movement. will be used. A small needle blocks the flow of oil to increase compression damping, dissipate energy and reduce the “ramp up” of the air spring. This means that rebound damping is unaffected, so you can take advantage of both. A cushion that relieves harsh bottom-outs without kickbacks or increasing spring rates at the end of the trip. The coil springs have not been resized and can continue to be used in the “Red Hot” signature colorway.

RC2T damper and Debon Air +

What do those letters and numbers stand for? Super Deluxe Ultimate features both high and low speed compression, rebound and threshold adjusters. With this damper, each compression adjuster has 5 clicks. Two times up, two times down, and a central “open” setting. They work completely independently of each other, each click is decisive and shares its properties with the Charger 3 fork damper. RockShox did this by designing the oil to flow first through the LSC circuit and then through the HSC.

To improve small bump compliance, RockShox now offers progressive or linear air can sizes. Linear-sized air can match what is currently being produced, and progressive air is reminiscent of the MegNeg version, which has a larger amount of negative air. The 2023 token is purple, matches the color of the seal head, and is not backward compatible. Both linear and progressive air cans can hold up to one negative token and four positive tokens.

Adding a token or volume spacer will reduce the airflow. On the plus side, this makes the air shock spring more advanced at the end of the stroke, making bottom-out difficult. Placing one in the negative chamber makes the shock more linear. The beginning of the trip is solid and progress is less towards the end.
