Both iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max feature new efficient always-on displays. Instead of turning off your phone when you’re not using it, it will darken your lock screen wallpaper and keep the date, time, widgets, and other important information on your screen bright.
This is a welcome new feature for the iPhone (especially), but not everyone is happy with AODs.

How does Always On Display work?
Both the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models have ProMotion 120Hz screens, so the display updates 120 times per second. The higher the refresh rate, the smoother and sharper the screen, the faster and more responsive. This is good, but it consumes a lot of power.
The iPhone 13 Pro model has the same ProMotion 120Hz screen, but without the ability to change the refresh rate. Only the iPhone 14 Pro model can shrink the display down to just 1 Hz and refresh only once per second, enabling dark and power efficient AOD.
The always-on display is temporarily turned off
Despite its name, AOD sometimes hangs. Apple has a list of examples when the display is completely turned off to save battery.
- iPhone face down
- Your iPhone is in your pocket or bag
- iPhone is connected to CarPlay
- Your iPhone connects to your Apple Watch and you’re off.
- Let the iPhone sit idle for a while (according to Apple, the iPhone will learn your patterns and automatically turn off AOD).
- Sleep focus is enabled
- Low power mode is enabled
- you are using link camera
How to turn off always-on display completely
All of the above situations will temporarily turn off AOD, but if you’re not a fan, there’s a way to manually disable the new iPhone feature entirely.
In the settings application, display and brightnessscroll to the bottom and toggle it off always on.
