How does Always On Display work?

Both the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models have ProMotion 120Hz screens, so the display updates 120 times per second. The higher the refresh rate, the smoother and sharper the screen, the faster and more responsive. This is good, but it consumes a lot of power.

The iPhone 13 Pro model has the same ProMotion 120Hz screen, but without the ability to change the refresh rate. Only the iPhone 14 Pro model can shrink the display down to just 1 Hz and refresh only once per second, enabling dark and power efficient AOD.
