Filmmaker Matt Reeves has opened up about his original vision for The Batman and reassured fans that the planned trilogy is still in plans.
In 2022, Reeves and Robert Pattinson teamed up to bring a new version of The Dark Knight to the big screen. The movie surpassed all the expectations and went on to become a gigantic success. So, it didn’t come as a shock when Reeves and Warner Bros. decided to take the franchise forward with two planned sequels. It’s been more than two years since the release of The Batman and fans don’t have the slightest idea about how the franchise is going to move forward, making them worried about its future. However, Reeves has now officially addressed the situation, reassuring fans that he remains fully dedicated to completing the planned Batman trilogy.
In an interview with Collider, Reeves discussed his original vision for the trilogy, confirming that his plans remain unchanged following the success of the first film. When asked if the trilogy was still happening, Reeves said, “Yes, that is still the plan. I mean, it’s sticking very closely to the path we envisioned.” Moreover, the filmmaker didn’t shy away from admitting that the spin-off series, The Penguin, has changed a lot of things in the planned shared universe. However, he remains committed to taking The Batman trilogy forward by staying true to the storyline he initially conceived. He added, “Things kind of shifted. So, when we came up with the idea to do The Penguin, that was something where I had always intended to continue Penguin’s story, and wanted to tell this story of his beginning of rise to power. Because we know that he’s introduced in The Batman as a kind of mid-level, sort of overlooked, mocked figure, who’s not yet in anyone’s eyes the kingpin we come to know him as in the lore. And so, that was deliberate because I wanted— whereas it wasn’t Batman’s origin story, I wanted the origin stories of these other characters, of the Rogues Gallery and that story was originally going to be the entrée into the next movie.”
Reeves donned the director’s hat for The Batman after Ben Affleck stepped down due to the turbulent production of Justice League. The War for the Planet of the Apes helmer wrote the entire film and focused on bringing a younger version of Batman to the screen. As a result, Warner Bros. introduced Robert Pattinson as the new Caped Crusader and told a new story. The film was released in March 2022 and earned $134 million domestically in its opening weekend. Additionally, it received universal acclaim from critics, who praised it for its gripping storytelling and stunning visuals. On the other hand, viewers commended Pattinson for his gritty portrayal of The Dark Knight. One of the main aspects why The Batman worked is because it presented a darker, more grounded version of the iconic comic book character. It mainly focused on the character’s detective skills that weren’t explored in previous Batman movies. Moreover, the Gotham City shown in the film looked realistic, which enhanced the viewing experience.
Even though Reeves is known for handling trilogies like a pro, it won’t be easy for him to tell a story that resonates with the people. That’s one of the reasons why the filmmaker and the studio are taking things slowly and want to have a solid script before heading into production. With The Penguin changing the entire landscape of the shared universe, it would be interesting to see how Reeves would take the story forward, maintaining the same level of grit and realism that defined the first film.
The Batman – Part II is scheduled to release in theaters on October 2, 2026. Meanwhile, The Batman is available for streaming on MAX.
