A fan-developed mod for the PC version of Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered has finally brought online multiplayer to the game. Although leaks suggest Insomniac Games was once working on a standalone Marvel’s Spider-Man multiplayer game, the project was cancelled before an official reveal. Fans have often begged Insomniac to revitalize the project, but it looks like they are now taking things into their own hands with an epic new mod.
In 2023, shortly after the launch of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, developer Insomniac Games fell victim to a massive data breach. The leak resulted in tons of unannounced projects and plans making their way online, including a standalone Venom game, Marvel’s Spider-Man 3, a new Ratchet & Clank title, and more. While the leak appears to have altered these plans (as the standalone Venom game was supposed to launch this year), it did give fans a look at some canceled projects, including a Spider-Man multiplayer game known as The Great Web.
Marvel’s Spider-Man Now Has a Multiplayer Mod
Unfortunately, The Great Web was reportedly canceled prior to the data breach, but a leaked trailer led fans to wonder what the game could have been like. Although we may never know what Insomniac had in store for its release, one fan has taken it upon themselves to develop their very own multiplayer mod for Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered on PC, and it looks epic. As spotted by Okami on Twitter, modder hbgda has recently published the multiplayer mod over on their Patreon. It allows fans to team up with their friends and take on the game’s campaign together. Unfortunately, the mod is locked behind a paywall, so fans looking to check it out will need to pay first.
Insomniac is currently busy developing Marvel’s Wolverine, which hasn’t seen the light of day since its initial reveal all the way back in 2021. It’s unclear what could be taking the studio so long to develop the title, but it could be that an announcement was made too soon, or the big 2023 leaks have set Insomniac back substantially. While very little has been said about the game, the studio did provide a disappointing update for Marvel’s Wolverine back in April, stating that the game is still in active development and news will only be shared when the studio is ready to do so.
Many fans are also beginning to question whether or not the leaked Venom game has also been canceled. However, an industry insider shared a positive update with fans back in July, claiming that a reveal for the standalone Venom game could be arriving either during a State of Play event in September or at Geoff Keighley’s Game Awards in December. Insomniac has yet to address these claims, but with rumors circulating from journalists of a State of Play for next month, fans might not have long to go until an official reveal.
