Devils are often motivated by their own agenda; they do as they please unless a stronger Devil gets in their way. However, this also begs the question of whether they care for others aside from seeking to incite fear and the blood of humans.
Are Devils Capable of Caring For Others?
Devils Feed off Fear, But Are They Capable of Caring?
In Chainsaw Man, Devils are vicious monsters born from the concept of human fears. At the start of the series, we see Denji fighting various Devils as a Private Sector Devils Hunter or within the Public Safety Devil Hunter Commission. This goes to say that humans hate Devils. But are Devils capable of caring for others, humans and devils?
There are a few instances in which Devils are capable of caring for others to a certain extent. However, this capability also requires a certain level of intelligence. In Chapter 5, Makima notes that Power has a higher intelligence and reasoning level than other Devils. Devils with lower intelligence levels are likely only motivated by their base instinct.
The first Devil we see capable of caring for others is Pochita, the Chainsaw Devil. Although Pochita only communicates through barking and whining like a dog, when he is fused with Denji, we see intelligent thought and caring. This is noted in Episode 12, where Pochita tries to prevent Denji from opening the door or remembering his traumatic past. In addition to various instances throughout the series, Pochita and Denji are seen cuddling together.
The next Devil or Fiend we know of is Power. In Chapter 4, Power has a very assertive attitude and essentially sees humans as inferior beings. However, in Chapter Meowy’s Whereabouts, Powers caring personality shines through. Although through Season 1 of the anime, Power still only cares about herself and her cat, Meowy. Although Power didn’t care much for humans, after living with Hayakawa Aki and Denji, Power soon bonded with the two.
Denji… He’s my first friend.
After the International Assassins and Gun Devil arc, Power and Denji bonded to the point that Power allowed Denji to drink her blood, furthermore, in Chapter 90, Power calls Denji her buddy. Power cares for Denji so much that she gives up her blood to revive him in exchange for finding the Blood Devil and turning it back into Power.
Additionally, Makima, the Control Devil, cared for several dogs, giving them names and treating them well. This mostly reflects her personality as the Control Devil. Dogs are known to follow instructions and obey when appropriately trained. Makima, as the Control Devil, enjoys controlling others to the point of seeing them as similar to dogs.
Are Devils Capable of Caring for Other Devils?
Devils Normally Act Alone, So Would They Care For Another Devil?
We’ve seen that Devils are capable of caring for others, namely humans and Pets. This brings the question of whether Devils are caring for other Devils. In Chapter 9, it was revealed that Devils can also have relationships. After Denji has defeated the Bat Devil, who kidnapped Meowy, the Leech Devil appears. The Leech Devil immediately attacked Denji for killing her “cutiepie Bat” and announced that he was her man.
This shows that Devils are capable of caring for other Devils and thus entering relationships. The Angel Devil also revealed that he was in a relationship with a human before he was taken and controlled by Makima. However, Devils are capable of caring for others. They likely put their own interests first before anyone else.

Chainsaw Man: The Prophecy, Explained
Chainsaw Man isn’t only about Denji’s quest for normalcy or a woman’s touch. A foretold Prophecy is predicted to occur, but what is this Prophecy?
In the Falling Devil arc, we learn more about the Famine Devil’s true plan regarding Nostradamus’s Prophecy. Here, we learn that the age of humans will end, and thus, the age of Devils will begin. Nayuta, the new Control Devil, first believes that it sounds fun and likes the idea of the age of Devils, showing her enjoyment of the chaos that would occur.
However, after the Famine Devil clarified that pizza and Chinese food would no longer exist, her selfish nature and interests took precedence over stopping the Prophecy. Although Devils can care for one another, it likely has something to do with their interests. This is also seen in Chapter 177, when the War Devil turned her own children, the Tank and Gun Devil, into weapons, although when asked about it, the War Devil showed hesitancy, as she might have felt sad to a certain extent.
Why do Devils Harm Humans?
Fear is Not Enough for Devils to Live Off
It’s clear that Devils are capable of caring for others, whether humans, pets, or other Devils. But why do Devils seek to harm humans? As previously mentioned, Devils are born from the concepts humans fear. For a Devil to gain more power, they need to incite more fear in humans; the more a human fears them, the more powerful they will become.
However, there is another method they can use to gain strength. Devils can drink the blood of humans or other more powerful Devils to gain more strength. We see this when Denji drinks the blood of the Eternity Devil to replenish himself and when Pochita allows Power to drink his blood.
Although Devils are capable of caring for others, likely, this may also weaken them. Devils need fear and the blood of humans to survive and gain power. Inherently, Devils are evil and seek to procure their own desires; however, intelligent Devils seek more than their base desires.
