Highlights
- Ranked Duos is not currently planned for Apex Legends, according to a Respawn developer.
- While some players hoped for a competitive Duos option, developers are prioritizing other aspects of the game at the moment.
- Season 20 brought significant updates to Apex Legends, with new features like Legends upgrades, a new EVO Shield system, and a Thunderdome map.
A developer at Respawn Entertainment has provided an update about the possibility of Ranked Duos coming to Apex Legends, revealing that there are no current plans for the mode. While Apex Legends has a regular Duos option for fans who enjoy playing on smaller squads, some were hoping for a more competitive version of the mode.
Apex Legends added Duos as a permanent mode in April 2020, meaning that it has been a major feature of the battle royale for almost four years. As the name suggests, the mode allows players to play on smaller teams and is favored by some in the game’s community. For example, the change from three to two-player squads makes finding a premade group easier. In addition, the mode is potentially better for solo-queue players thanks to more potential for 1v1 engagements. While not every player focuses on the mode, some of the advantages of the smaller team size have led to calls from the community for a dedicated Ranked option to be implemented.
Apex Legends Season 20: 7 Best Weapons, Ranked
With the arrival of Apex Legends’ Season 20, new nerfs and buffs have shaken up the meta, with these weapons now reigning supreme on the battlefield.
During a recent Reddit AMA, the topic of introducing a Ranked playlist for Duos came up, with one user asking if the mode could be added to the game. Unfortunately, a developer known as RSPN_Laker on Reddit responded with disappointing news for fans. “Dedicated Ranked Duos is not currently in our plans,” the dev said. However, they did not shut the door entirely on the idea, saying that they “hear the feedback and request.”
Unsurprisingly, some fans were disappointed by this developer update from Respawn. It is worth pointing out that this is not the only fan-requested mode that the developers of Apex Legends have said will likely not become a permanent fixture of the game. During Season 2, Respawn Entertainment introduced the Apex Solo LTM, which removed the team dynamic from the battle royale experience. While the solo mode became popular, with many requesting its permanent return, it will likely never happen. According to the developers, a Solo mode in Apex Legends went against the squad-based nature of the battle royale game.
Fortunately, the Ranked Duos omission from Apex Legends does not appear to be for the same reasons as Apex Solo, meaning it could be reconsidered in the future. While the brief response from RSPN_Laker did not go into much detail, it could be that developers believe that Trios represents the purest form of what Apex Legends is about and want it to be the sole focus when gamers play competitively. Another possibility could be that it would split the player base between two playlists for Ranked in Apex Legends.
While Apex Legends has yet to add Ranked Duos, Season 20 brought substantial updates to the gameplay experience. Respawn Entertainment added Legends upgrades and a new EVO Shield system, significantly impacting how the game is played. In addition, a brand-new Mixtape map called Thunderdome was introduced, available in all three of the playlist’s modes. Time will tell what else is in store for the latest season of the game in the weeks ahead.
