The upcoming horror movie Nightbitch stars Amy Adams as a frustrated mom who thinks she’s becoming a dog, and horror fans can check out the exciting trailer.
Written and directed by Marielle Heller and adapted from the novel of the same name by Rachel Yoder, Nightbitch will be released on December 6th, 2024. The movie will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 7, 2024. Heller previously directed A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, Can You Ever Forgive Me? and Diary of a Teenage Girl. She is also familiar to Queen’s Gambit fans since she played Alma Wheatley in the popular Netflix drama.
In the trailer for Nightbitch, Amy Adams is a stay-at-home mom who loves her son but is bored by her daily routine. When a woman in the supermarket says “He’s so cute! Don’t you just love getting to be home with him all the time?” the camera cuts to her child being a chaotic mess. She smiles and lies, “Yeah I do, I love it.” Adams’s character tells other moms that she was once an artist but that was her old life.
Things get creepy when Adams realizes that her teeth look different and finds herself growling and acting like a dog. When compared to other horror movies about motherhood, Nighbitch stands out because Adams’s character is simply called “Mother.” The fact that the character isn’t given a name makes her feel relatable and approachable. She could be anyone since many people feel the same boredom and hope to get back to their old life after becoming a stay-at-home parent. No matter how much they love their children, it’s natural to feel these emotions. Nightbitch sounds a bit like the underrated 2000s horror movie Ginger Snaps but with the added stress, pressures, and anxiety of parenthood.
Rounding out the cast of Nightbitch are Mary Holland, Jessica Harper, Ella Thomas, Zoë Chao, Arleigh Patrick Snowden, Emmett James Snowden, and Scoot McNairy. Holland and Chao, who are both known for their comedic roles, play Mother’s friends, and McNairy, who played Tommy in Gone Girl, plays Mother’s husband. Chao starred in the AppleTV+ sitcom The Afterparty and the funny films Senior Year, Somebody I Used To Know, And I Used To Go Here.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Adams discusses how her character embraces parenthood when she has the same traits, behaviors, and qualities as a dog. This is what makes Nightbitch different from horror movies about mothers and daughters. Adams said, “through her parenting—through her mothering—she got in touch with something bigger and something primal.”
Adams’s acting looks impressive in the trailer, and it will be compelling to see her star in a horror movie. While she appeared in the eerie Tom Ford thriller Nocturnal Animals, she is best known for the sci-fi flick Arrival, dramas such as Hibilly Elegy, and rom-coms like Leap Year. Nightbitch looks like a terrifying time for horror fans who want a creepy story with a sense of humor and a smart point of view.
