Paddle Creek Games’ survival MMO Fractured Veil is shutting down. The action-adventure game set in Hawaii launched into early access in January 2024, and at the time, the small team of about 10 developers seemed optimistic about its future. As recently as August, Paddle Creek had released an update for the indie game that featured bug fixes, improvements, and lore, and revealed plans for upcoming content like support for other languages, new vendors and NPCs, and more decorations for player bases.
In Fractured Veil, the protagonist awakens as a clone on the island of Maui 100 years in the future after some kind of apocalypse has laid everything to waste. Alone, in a group on PVE-only servers, or with a bit more tension on PVP servers, the goal is initially to find food, water, and shelter, and ultimately to build a base for survival against the harsh environment, mutants, and other players. With up to 500 people struggling together on a single map, Fractured Veil feels like a mix between Endnight Games’ well-received Sons of the Forest and Starry Studios’ hit free-to-play survival MMO Once Human.

Unfortunately for those players who were enjoying the post-apocalyptic, base-building, survival game experience offered up by Fractured Veil, the developer announced on October 7 that the game will be shutting down. The Steam page was intended to be removed on October 8, though at the time of writing, it’s still up. In a post on social media, Paddle Creek thanked all the players who had supported the game throughout the years and stated that the Discord would remain available for a few months.
Fractured Veil Devs Announce Game Shutdown
However, the Fractured Veil Discord server is no longer accepting new users, the company’s Twitter account has been deleted, and the official website also seems to be offline. There was no mention of how much longer the game servers will remain up, but it seems that the developer is giving players at least a little time to say goodbye.
Mahalo to everyone who helped and supported us through the years.
Fractured Veil has been in development since at least 2017, if browsing its Reddit page is any indication. Unfortunately, the hard work was not met with corresponding player enthusiasm. The survival MMO has maintained an extremely low average player count since February, according to SteamDB, after an initial surge when it first launched into early access.
For gamers still eager to try their hand at surviving and building an elaborate base in a post-apocalyptic world rife with monsters, the aforementioned Once Human, as well as The Forest and its sequel Sons of the Forest, should serve the purpose. Subnautica is an option that takes the challenge underwater, and Satisfactory by Coffee Stain Studios is another open-world solo and multiplayer offering that’s currently sitting at an “Overwhelmingly Positive” review rating on Steam.
