Sins of a Solar Empire 2 is a space strategy game that takes the original game, some of the elements of the Rebellion DLC, and then fleshes out gameplay gaps with new features. The game also simplifies the UI and makes learning how to play much easier than its predecessor.

Sins Of A Solar Empire 2: 7 Best Strategies
There are some key strategies that can give Sins Of A Solar Empire 2 players an advantage.
There are four classes of ships that players can construct and control when playing this grand strategy game. These are corvettes (very small), frigates (small), cruisers (medium), and capital ships (large). A good fleet will be made up of different types of all of these classes. Frigates are small ships that are agile, fast, and, in general, used for very specific roles on the battlefield. They are used for bombarding and capturing planets, providing defenses, and adding firepower support.
5 Krosov Siege Frigate
Specialized Planetary Bombardment Frigate
- Durability: 150
- Armor points: 550
- Hull points: 775
- Weapons: 1 x Planet Bomb
- DPS: 3
- Pierce: 0
The Krosov Siege Frigate is an important fleet unit in Sins of a Solar Empire 2, but it is only used for specific scenarios. It has one purpose on the battlefield, to initiate a genocide against the planetary population while bombarding the planet with bombs. This is a precursor for capturing a planet, as the planet needs to be bombed back to the stone age for it to be colonized by the invader.

Sins Of A Solar Empire 2: 7 Best Real-Time Combat Tips
Real-time combat in Sins Of A Solar Empire 2 requires both strategic and tactical thinking for the best results.
Although the Krosov Siege Frigate does have a use, other ships, such as battleships, also have a planetary bombardment capability. Seeing as the Krosov Siege Frigate brings nothing else to a fleet, it can sometimes be a better idea to simply use a capital ship to fill the planetary bombardment role, and this is why it is at the bottom of this list.
4 Protev Colony Frigate
Required To Colonize Planets And Asteroids
- Durability: 150
- Armor points: 420
- Hull points: 1120
- Antimatter: 225
Protev Colony Frigate is the only fleet unit that can be used to colonize planets and asteroids. Therefore, every player of Sins Of A Solar Empire 2 will use this ship. However, it is a one-trick pony and has no space combat capabilities at all.
The Protev Colony Frigate is quite tanky, which is a good thing, as it is often used to snatch a colony before a fleet engagement is complete, so it needs to be able to survive a few hits. Once the player reaches a game stage where colonization of new assets is no longer possible, this frigate becomes useless.
3 Cobalt Light Frigate
Basic Attack Craft
- Durability: 50
- Armor points: 580
- Hull points: 550
- Weapons: 1 x Medium Autocannon
- DPS: 7.3
- Pierce: 150
The Cobalt Light Frigate is an excellent general-purpose frigate that excels at reinforcing the line of battle to provide additional damage output. It also makes an excellent fleet picket, being able to quickly engage and lock down incoming threats to the fleet in this 4X game.

Sins Of A Solar Empire 2: Best Planetary Infrastructure To Build First
Getting a good start in Sins Of A Solar Empire 2 means building the right infrastructure at the right time.
However, the Cobalt Light Frigate is best used in small packs, as a single ship won’t survive long against any significant threat. It is also very useful for chasing down larger ships such as cruisers, due to its decent speed. Overall, this is a jack-of-all-trades unit that isn’t great at any one thing, but its cheap cost and general utility give it value in real-time combat.
2 Garda Flak Frigate
Fleet Missile Defense
- Durability: 50
- Armor points: 480
- Hull points: 475
- Weapons: 4 x Point Defense Autocannon
- DPS: 2
- Pierce: 0
The Garda Flak Frigate is extremely useful in fleet engagement. Large targets such as battleships, carriers, and dreadnaughts have almost no defense against missiles. This frigate acts as a missile screen for the rest of the fleet, shooting down enemy missiles long before they can impact a larger target.
It takes some practice to learn how to position the Garda Flak Frigate in a fleet formation when playing Sins of a Solar Empire 2. Because of this, new players often ignore this unit, and try to bully their way through swarms of enemy missiles. Using the Garda Flak Frigate as a missile screen is much more economical, as it can greatly minimize fleet losses in such a scenario.
1 Kalev Gauss Frigate
Glass Cannon Anti Cruiser Platform
- Durability: 150
- Armor points: 645
- Hull points: 715
- Weapons: 1 x Gauss Cannon
- DPS: 7.5
- Pierce: 600
The Kalev Gauss Frigate isn’t a frontline unit during fleet engagements since it has very light defenses and cannot sustain more than a few hits; however, this is not how the ship is designed to be used. It is nothing more than a mobile platform for a high-damage Gauss Cannon. This ship isn’t available until the relevant military research has been done though.

Sins Of A Solar Empire 2: All Playable Factions Explained
Choosing a playable faction in Sins Of A Solar Empire 2 will directly impact how the player tackles the game. Here’s a breakdown of each of them.
During fleet engagements, the Kalev Gauss Frigate is used to target enemy cruisers. In Sins of a Solar Empire 2, cruisers are often used as ships of the line, screening capital ships from incoming damage. It is the Kalev Gauss Frigate that has the baked-in role of destroying cruisers. In a pinch, it can be used to support capital ships to take down larger units than cruisers, or even planetary infrastructure. But it needs to be kept well away from enemy units, as it is extremely vulnerable.
