- Reddit user Samheck is responsible for the wooden Metapod model, with the fan adding it to a terrarium with other Gen 1 carvings.
A Pokemon fan artist took up their carving tools and crafted a Metapod from wooden blocks as part of a tiny critter collection. The Pokemon fan artist shared the carving and painting process for Metapod on social media and received compliments from their peers for their attention to detail with their woodwork.
Known as the Cocoon Pokemon, Metapod made its debut in Pokemon Red and Blue. As the first evolution of Caterpie, Metapod was first encountered by novice trainers in Kanto’s Viridian Forest. Upon reaching level 10, Metapod sheds its skin and evolves into Butterfree, with an added Flying type to go with its base Bug-type. Metapod is a green cocoon with just two white eyes on the side and is incapable of movement as it saves energy for its evolution. Ergo, the Metapod’s only moves are Harden, and if evolved from a Caterpie, Tackle, and String Shot. However, Metapod is among the Pokemon that are unobtainable in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.

Metapod is far from the toughest Bug Pokemon of the batch, though that has not stopped one Pokemon fan from making a wooden tribute to it. A Reddit user named Samheck posted a 50-second video on the r/Pokemon subreddit of their project. To start the video, Samheck showed a wooden block that had a printed Metapod render taped on three sides. According to Samheck, the Metapod render was taken freely from Blender for easy tracing. After carving out one half of Metapod’s body, Samheck then took another block and carved a mirrored half of Metapod to paste together. After that, the wooden Metapod was dipped in green paint, followed by an oil coating and some cleaning with a towel.
Metapod was then dried in a machine to finish the job before being added to a terrarium with other Gen 1 Pokemon wood carvings that Samheck had created. The artist said that their Metapod had a magnet attached to the backside so it could be added to their terrarium. In response to Samheck’s handiwork, Pokemon fans praised the carver for their continued effort. Samheck stated that the paint chosen for Metapod did not turn out as green as they had hoped, with other users arguing that it would fit with an autumnal theme if Metapod were to evolve in the latter half of the year.
As trainers wait for more news about the upcoming Pokemon Legends: Z-A, artists like Samheck have found ways to remember the critters that did not appear in the Paldea region. It remains to be seen when Metapod will return to the Pokemon series.
