According to an interview, Final Fantasy 16 game director Hiroshi Takai stated that Square Enix and Creative Studio 3 are aware of players’ requests to port the game to Xbox Series X/S. While Takai did not confirm any potential plans for a Final Fantasy 16 Xbox launch, he stated that he would enjoy seeing that happen eventually.
The news arrived during a busy week for Final Fantasy 16. On August 19, Creative Studio 3 revealed that the long-awaited PC port of Final Fantasy 16 would launch on September 17 on both Steam and the Epic Games Store, with a Complete Edition that includes the Echoes of the Fallen and The Rising Tide expansions. The PC version announcement arrived one day before the 2024 Gamescom Opening Night Live broadcast, as Square Enix dropped the announcement trailer on social media. The PC version of Final Fantasy 16 will be compatible with AMD FSR, Nvidia DLSS, and Intel XeSS upscaling technologies, will have an uncapped frame rate, and will require an SSD with at least 170 GB of free space.

Even though the PC launch will be over a year since Final Fantasy 16‘s initial PS5 launch, it may still have some plans for future releases. According to Windows Central, Takai said that he would love to see Final Fantasy 16 launched on the Xbox Series X/S in the future, but reiterated that Creative Studio 3 is taking one thing at a time with getting the PC port ready for its September 17 release. Ergo, Final Fantasy 16 will remain a PS5 console exclusive for the time being. Takai noted the positive feedback from Final Fantasy fans about the characters and the story of Final Fantasy 16 and said that it was encouraging to hear.

Although rumors of Final Fantasy 16‘s Xbox port have persisted since the PC port was announced, Square Enix has an existing partnership with Microsoft that resulted in Final Fantasy 14‘s Xbox port. Whether that will be leveraged in bringing more Final Fantasy games to Xbox consoles in the future remains to be seen.
While Xbox fans may have to wait a little longer to play Final Fantasy 16, the upcoming PC port will allow more players to experience one of the best dark fantasy action RPGs available. Only time will tell when Microsoft and Square Enix will team up again.
