In a video posted on Reddit by user gem-stash, the player can be seen casually riding along the choppy river that runs between the crumbling buildings in The Last of Us Part 2. As they reach the end of the stream, which should have turned into a new area of The Flooded City set in Seattle, gem-stash’s journey comes to an abrupt end as they find themselves floating off the map and into the void. The river can still be seen in the background of the clip, but instead of more locations to explore filled with enemies and ruins, a vast empty space has greeted the player and turned the speedboat into a hovering airship.

What makes the 30-second video amusing is the fact that Ellie looks the part gliding around the game’s cosmos as she wears her spacesuit, which is taken from one of the most memorable scenes from The Last of Us 2 when Joel takes Ellie to the museum for her birthday. However, some fans in the comment section of the video believe that the spacesuit could be the reason why the bug initially occurred. User Hot_Bel_Pepper advised gem-stash not to switch their main outfit to the space outfit mid-game unless it’s from the main menu, as this could be the reason for the strange boat glitch due to a coding error.


Although glitches and bugs can be a frustrating experience for any player, some errors in game development can shape the entire game experience and become iconic gaming features. While this Last of Us 2 boat bug may not fit into that bracket, it sure makes an interesting talking point within the community as fans wait with bated breath to see what the studio will do next as Naughty Dog starts work on an all-new IP.
