Steam Users Have Until August 31 to Claim Free Action Game

Walking Survival is a 2D top-down action game that’s free on Steam until August 31. Unlike most recent free-to-keep titles, Walking Survival is a fairly new release with few reviews, making it a more experimental pick for Steam freebie hunters.

The last week of August has been rewarding for PC gamers. Steam gave away Dead in Bermuda ahead of its sequel’s launch and offered several games as free trials, including Darkest Dungeon 2 and Forts, both well-regarded in their genres. Now, Valve’s storefront is giving away another free game to round out August’s lineup before the month ends.

Walking Survival Is a 2D Action Game with Roguelike and Shoot ‘Em Up Elements

Currently free on Steam until August 31, Walking Survival is an action game where players fight off endless waves of monsters using spells and power-ups. Its gameplay is similar to Brotato, placing players in an arena where they must continually upgrade their character to survive against increasingly tougher enemies. Normally, Walking Survival is priced at around $5 USD on Steam, with a separate DLC titled GOD available for about $2. That said, those who claim it before the current promotion ends can keep the base game forever with no strings attached.

Walking Survival only takes up about 300 MB of storage, making it a low-spec game that can run on most PCs. Thanks to its endless waves of enemies, it also offers solid replay value for fans of the genre. The biggest drawback for now is the lack of player reviews, leaving its performance and gameplay hard to judge without trying it firsthand.

Fans of Walking Survival‘s gameplay loop may also want to check out games like Temp Zero, Brotato, and Tiny Rogues. These minimalist roguelike games appeal to players who enjoy battling procedurally generated waves of increasingly stronger enemies. There are also games like Cosmic Cursor that deliver a similar gameplay experience, but with creative twists that help keep the repeating loops fresh.

Once the Walking Survival promotion ends, Steam is reportedly set to give away 911 Operator, a crisis management simulator. However, no clear date has been confirmed for that giveaway, and it’s likely the storefront will add more free-to-keep titles to its September lineup. Meanwhile, Epic Games Store users can currently claim two free titles: Make Way, a $14 top-down racing party game, and Machinarium, a $20 acclaimed puzzle adventure. Once these two promotions end, Epic Games Store will give away Monument Valley and The Battle of Polytopia starting September 4.
